Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dogs are the Pride of the South

This dedicated Dog needs a strong leader and a job to do.
By Vicki Shields

As he opens the gate from horseback, Aubrey Aden calls a signal and his three Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dogs, Genny, Bullet, and Freddie, swing into action to move the herd of 80 cows from their overnight holding pen to a grassy field for daytime grazing.

“Genny and Freddie move in behind the herd to keep them bunched and moving, and Bullet works the front,” says Aden, a breeder and rancher in Carriere, Miss. “Bullet keeps the cows going in the right direction and heads off any strays that try to run off, but if the whole herd starts to run, all three dogs break out and circle them back. It’s instinctive — Catahoulas just know to keep the cows together.”
