The original canine family member
Centuries ago, when early Samoyede people of Siberia began keeping dogs, they selected animals with particular traits to serve specific purposes. One type of primitive dog proved useful not only as a worker and companion, but also as a body warmer, says Jim B., a longtime Samoyed fancier and coordinator of the National Samoyed Rescue in Michigan. “Part of the Samoyed’s job would be to come into the chooms [shelters] on really cold nights and snuggle up with the family to keep them warm,” he says.
