The New Year doesn’t have to be about major resolutions. Make seven easy tweaks to your thinking or routine and reap major rewards — for you and your dog — with results in just 30 days.

 

Old thinking: “My dog’s not overweight; he’s just got a lot of hair.”

New approach: Say goodbye to denial. A whopping 45 percent of the nation’s dogs are overweight or obese, according to a 2009 study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Feel your dog to gauge his fitness: Run your hands along his sides toward the tail. You should be able to feel (but not see) his ribs. If your dog “flunks,” it’s time to help him drop a few pounds.
