‘Best in Show’ Lives On

The people may have changed, but the characters from Christopher Guest’s classic film remain the same at the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
By Peter Gerstenzang

When I was asked to cover the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held this past February, and get the real story, I was a bit apprehensive.

Would that mean going undercover? Having to squeeze into my dog suit again and pretend I was a Dachshund with a thyroid problem? I tried that at the last dog show I went to, and people are still laughing about it. Don’t ask, I can’t really explain it. Hey, I can’t even explain why I own a dog suit!

However, when I was told I could go in my civies, then compare and contrast a few of Westminster’s dogs and their people with the characters in the classic dog-show spoof “Best in Show,” I calmed down.
