NYPD Unleashes New Weapons in the War on Terror

Elite transit K9 team will patrol New York City’s subway system.

Four specially trained German Shepherd Dog K9s were deployed last week to search for bombs on the New York City transit system in a new anti-terrorism program.

The inaugural transit K9 team, the first of a planned task force of 27 dogs, reported for duty after intensive training to accustom the dogs to crowds, cramped spaces, and loud noises, said Lt. John Pappas, commander of the new unit, in an interview with the New York Post.

Besides their important role in detecting bombs, the dogs are expected to help reduce crime.
