The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is scheduled to reopen to the public today, Jan. 27, 2007, after a renovation that saw the creation of designer apartment-like habitats for homeless dogs and cats.

Twenty-four doggie apartments and 15 cat habitats were redesigned, courtesy of the San Diego chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. Working within pet safety guidelines, each designer created living spaces that the humane society says will “assist in providing a positive atmosphere for pet adoption.”

“As designers, we know that good design enriches people’s lives,” ASID chapter president Nina Closser said in a statement. “It has been a great opportunity to create spaces that are functional, livable, beautiful and fun for the animals and their visitors.”

Among the various themes are “Hawaiian surf,” cityscape and beach motifs.

The facility was closed from Jan. 21 to 25 for the renovations. For more information on the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, visit

Interesting I think dogs and cats would find and open field and a comfortable bed with lots of good food better then a designer room, maybe the renovation was more for the humans need?
