Dog Lover Ellen DeGeneres Wants a ‘Big Farm’

The comedian says she and new wife Portia de Rossi want to care for many animals.

Ellen DeGeneres, who wed longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi over the weekend of August 16, is coy on the subject of having kids, but will allow that more animals are in the cards for the dog-loving pair, who sparked a media frenzy last year when they found a new home for a dog they had rescued, in violation of an adoption agreement.

“We want a big farm and to just take care of every kind of animal that needs taking care of,” DeGeneres told People.

A rescued goldfish even played an unlikely role in the duo’s engagement when de Rossi took the fish home from a TV shoot.

“We were watching the fish and Ellen said, ‘This is a pretty romantic moment, right?’” de Rossi remembers. “And I said, ‘Every moment with you is romantic.’ And then she gave me the ring.”

The couple, who began dating in 2004, announced their engagement soon after the California Supreme Court passed a ruling allowing same-sex marriages.

“[Getting married] is not something we’ve ever taken for granted,” de Rossi says. “That we get to do this, it means a lot.”

DeGeneres says being married “feels different. I didn’t think it would, because I already had the commitment. I was already planning on spending the rest of my life with her. But until you’re married, you just don’t know. It feels wonderful.”
