A black Labrador Retriever named Jodie has worked her final day as an arson dog for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to spokesman Mike Schmitz.
Accelerant Detection Canine Jodie, age 9, worked 330 fire scenes during her nearly eight years of service to the Wichita Fire Department, Schmitz said. She and her handler, Capt. Brad Crisp, responded to and worked fire scenes that led to 62 felony arrests.
Two of the team’s cases were particularly difficult fire scenes to work, including a Wichita apartment fire where a nude decapitated female body was discovered, a case that led to a first-degree murder conviction.
The second was a Wichita residence fire where a female victim was found to have been murdered before the fire started. The case also resulted in a first-degree murder conviction.
Jodie’s last official day was Friday, Oct. 31. The department plans to send Crisp to be trained with his new K9 partner at ATF’s Canine Training Facility in Front Royal, Va.
