The 3-year-old Citrus Heights Police Department, one of the area’s youngest, is following a well-worn path in adding a K9 unit. The department sees police dogs as a good investment, even in an era of tight budgets. So far, K9 units are proving somewhat recession-proof with no reports of any being axed by area law enforcement agencies, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Drug-sniffing Dogs Search High School Campus
Yorktown High School administration requested a narcotics search by K9 unit on Oct. 31. K9 dogs from Yorktown, Alexandria, Middletown, Anderson and Ball State University were in training so they were asked to do the search. Dogs Predicted U.S. Election Outcome, Group Says
Organizers of a Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., costume party for dogs and their owners said canines predicted the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. The organizers of Howl-ween, also known as Corky’s Canine Costume Party, said hundreds of dogs participated in the “Bark the Vote” election and cast ballots in the form of barking for Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain, United Press International reports.
