DOG FANCY Named Best All-Breed Magazine

BowTie Inc. publications pick up nine Dog Writers Association of America Maxwell Awards.

DOG FANCY March 2009BowTie Inc., publisher of DOG FANCY magazine, was honored with 28 nominations and nine Maxwell Awards at the annual Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) writing competition awards ceremony and banquet on Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Affinia Manhattan Hotel in New York City. A number of BowTie magazines and websites were nominated, including DogChannel.com, DOG FANCY, Dog World, Dogs for Kids, the Popular Dogs Series, Dogs USA, Puppies USA, HobbyFarms.com, Hobby Farm Home, BowTie Press, and Kennel Club Books.

The DWAA awards ceremony is traditionally held the evening before the first day of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, when many top dog writers and industry professionals descend on New York City for the prestigious dog show. According to the DWAA, the writing contest is “meant to encourage quality writing about dogs in all aspects of companionship plus the dog sport.”

The following BowTie publications received the coveted DWAA Maxwell Award:

  • Magazine, Feature in a Single-Breed Magazine: Susan McCullough, “You Don’t Know Shih Tzu” (Shih Tzu Puppies/Popular Dogs Series)
  • Magazine Feature in a Yearbook/Annual/Special Publication: Sandy Robins, “No Bullies Here” (Bully Breeds/Popular Dogs Series)
  • Magazine, Article on Training and/or Behavior: Jacque Lynn Schultz, “Potty Particulars” (Dachshund Puppies/Popular Dogs Series)
  • Magazine, Subject-Related Series: Meredith Wargo, “Kids Can Do It” (Dogs for Kids)
  • Book, General Reference: Bo Bengtson, “Best in Show” (Kennel Club Books)
  • Morris Animal Foundation Advances in Canine Veterinary Medicine Award: Matthew Schenker, “Healthy Integration” (Dog World)
  • WCFO Excellence in Canine Freestyle Media Award: Kim Campbell Thornton, “Dancing With the Dog Stars” (Dog World)

I love Dog Fancy. I get it every month along with my Consumer Reports. I just wish that there would be more emphasis on spaying and nuetering, adopting from shelters and kill facilities, mixed breed dogs and less about breeders and events that only purebreds can participate in. Otherwise , it's great!
