A New York City event to honor animal advocates takes place Thursday, May 7, at Tavern on the Green in Manhattan's Central Park.

The honorees at the “Gala on the Green,” hosted by Broadway star and animal advocate Bernadette Peters along with her dog Kramer and the New York-based Bideawee animal welfare group, include the Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign. The pet food maker’s annual campaign helped save the lives of more than 1.2 million pets this past holiday season.

The event will showcase “Pet Adoption as the Green Option” and raise funds to benefit Bideawee and its mission to promote healthy, long-term relationships between people and pets. The gala also features a cocktail hour and dinner, followed by an award presentation honoring animal advocates, with dancing to a live orchestra.

The honorees of the evening are:

  • Ellen Grimes, Bideawee Board Emerita;
  • Missy the Reading to Dogs program therapy dog;
  • Iams Pet Food and the Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign.

This year canine companions are invited to join their owners for the evening. Presenters of the evening include CBS’ “The Early Show” correspondent Dr. Debbye Turner Bell, “The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet” host Mike Jerrick, supermodel and animal advocate Paulina Porizkova, NBC’s “Today” show correspondent and animal lover Jill Rappaport and actress and animal lover Linda Dano.
