Betty White and Puppy Steal Scene in ‘The Proposal’

The actress says working in show business helps pay for her animal charity work.

Posted: June 19, 2009, 5 a.m. EDT

At 87, famous animal lover Betty White is on top of the world. She’s making movies back-to-back, and even got to combine her two loves, acting and animals, during a scene in her latest gig “The Proposal,” which stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

“Oh, that little Samoyed puppy was so adorable,” White told the Orlando Sentinel. “I just walked in for a rehearsal and just automatically, without even thinking about it, took the dog away from Ryan,” White laughs. “It wasn’t supposed to be staged that way, so I thought, ‘They’re never going to let me get away with that.’ But nobody said anything so that’s the way we played it when we shot it. But Ryan was snuggling that adorable puppy, too. We all fell in love.”

White, who has been making movies for more than 50 years, is as in-demand an actress as ever. She has a voice role in late summer’s animated “Ponyo,” and recently signed on to star in “You Again” with Kristin Bell, Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“My life is divided absolutely in half. Half is my animal work and half is show business,” she says. “I have to stay in show business just to pay for my animal charity work. How can you complain about doing the two things you love most in this world?”

Samoyeds are the perfect dog for families. The golden retriever is the breed always seen when it comes to the "family" dog, however the sammie was actually bred from ancient times to be with the children. More and more people need to learn about this dog breed.

The little Samoyed puppy was certainly the true star in the movie! My family have had samoyeds all my life and I would never dream of having another breed. Their character is truly unique and as puppys, they are adorable!

I am currently on my second Samoyed, who is now 15 months old. As much as I loved the humor in the movie, "Proposal" I couldn't help but fall in love with the Samoyed puppy. He stood out from the rest of the stars for me, and reminded me exactly how my "Sammy" acted when he was so young. I wish more movies or TV shows would have Samoyeds in them.
