Tatooed Men Tell Dog Rescue Tales

In ‘Rescue Ink,’ tough guys take dogs’ welfare to heart.

Posted: November 30, 2009, 5 a.m. EST

How do 10 heavily-tattooed men with 1,700 pounds of muscle between them enjoy spending their free time? By saving animals, of course.

The men of Rescue Ink, a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Long Island, N.Y., have made national headlines with their unique approach to animal rescue – and unique appearances. And in their new book, “Rescue Ink: How Ten Guys Saved Countless Dogs and Cats, Twelve Horses, Five Pigs, One Duck, and a Few Turtles” with DOG FANCY Contributor Denise Flaim, readers are introduced to the members – and animals – that make the organization.

Coming from all walks of life, the men of Rescue Ink: Angel, Batso, Big Ant, Bruce, Des, Eric, G, Joe, Johnny O, and Robert all have their own story. From Johnny O’s struggle with drugs to the six bullet holes that remind Joe of his violent past, the rough-and-tumble bunch share trials and tribulations and their unifying passion: protecting animals.

Learning about their personal histories, and the animals they do and have loved, one can’t help but admire the crew. Despite appearances – 75-year-old Batso’s tattooed face certainly makes him a standout – the guys are animal lovers at heart and make it their job to prevent abuse, neglect, and mistreatment. Though their intimidating presence can help them make their point, the book reveals each member to be a loving and compassionate animal advocate.

By confronting abusers, educating the public, protesting against inhumane practices, and finding homes for animals in need, Rescue Ink is on a mission to help every animal they can. And with their growing fame and list of successes, they won’t be stopping any time soon.

“Rescue Ink: How Ten Guys Saved Coutless Dogs and Cats, Twelve Horses, Five Pigs, One Duck, and a Few Turtles” by Rescue Ink with Denise Flaim is on sale now.
