The Road to Recovery for Michael Vick’s Dogs
In July 2007, Michael Vick and three other men were arrested and charged with operating an interstate dogfighting ring. Much attention has been paid to Vick and whether he should have been eligible to return to the NFL when he was released from prison. It turns out there was also an extremely successful effort to rehabilitate the pit bulls rescued from his compound. Many found new lives as pets, and others live peacefully with other dogs in animal sanctuaries, NPR reports.

As Humans Gain Weight, Pets Do, Too
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 34.2 percent of Americans over age 20 were overweight as of 2008, and another 33.8 percent were obese. As human waistlines have ballooned, so has pets' girth: A 2009 national survey of veterinarians by the Association for the Prevention of Pet Obesity found that 45 percent of dogs and 58 percent of cats were overweight or obese, MSNBC reports.

Dog Gets Stem Cell Therapy for Hip Dysplasia
Honey, a 9-year-old Labrador Retriever, underwent a first-ever procedure for Utah that is expected to heal the dog’s hip dysplasia. The stem cell procedure involved removing fatty tissue from Honey’s shoulder and separating out the stem cells in a process that includes light-emitting diodes. Veterinarian Rob Bagley then injected the activated cells back into the animal’s diseased joints, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
