Call ‘em top dogs: The AKC Humane Fund has announced the winners of the 11th annual Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE), which commemorate five loyal, hard-working dogs every year who have made significant contributions to their communities.

Retriever Ricochet won Exemplary Companion Dog, for his charitable efforts raising money for several nonprofits – he surfs!

“To be recognized is an extreme honor, and I’m so thankful to the AKC, and the worldwide community that supports Ricochet’s efforts,” says owner Judy Fridono of Escondido, Calif. “I’m overwhelmed and brought to tears by the outpouring of kindness and generosity we’ve experienced on this journey.”

Fridono says she’ll use the award as a platform to raise even more awareness and funds for human and animal causes. “I’m sincerely grateful to the AKC for recognizing Ricochet’s contributions to the community, and the bond she shares with me... and the rest of the world,” she says.

Other winners include Cassius, owned by Peter Taft of Brooklyn, N.Y., for Search and Rescue Dog; Rufus, owned by Thomas and Barbara Bishop of Holmdel, N.J., for Therapy Dog; Wyatt, owned by Janice Wolfe of Wyckoff, N.J., for Service Dog; and Nike, owned by Senior Corporal Mark Tobin, New Castle County Police of New Castle, Del., for Law Enforcement Dog.

Not any dog can jump on a surf board and know how it's done. Ricochet is amazing! I wish I knew how he was trained to do this...
