In what has become a holiday ritual to residents of San Francisco, adoptable dogs and cats have taken over window displays at Macy’s in the city’s Union Square. The 24th annual Macy’s Holiday Windows event, part of a partnership between the store and the San Francisco SPCA, aims to help find homes for the city’s homeless animals.

The pet display has been a winter staple since 1987, according to SF SPCA. During that time, more than 2,000 animals have been adopted and $250,000 has been raised to support the SF SPCA’s hospital, shelter and community initiatives. This year, the goal is to find homes for 320 animals by Sunday, Jan. 2. Almost 300 were adopted last year as part of the event.

"The Macy’s Holiday Windows featuring adoptable animals from the SF SPCA has become synonymous with the holidays among San Franciscans and has been an enormous boon to our efforts to bring comfort to the many adorable animals we  care for through donations and adoptions,” says Jennifer Scarlett, D.V.M., interim co-president of SF SPCA. “Through this wonderful partnership with Macy’s, I hope we inspire visitors to open their hearts and their homes to these precious cats and dogs.”

The dogs and cats will be in the Macy’s Windows everyday during the holidays, except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day when the store is closed. The environment is temperature controlled and has comfortable spots for quick catnaps, according to SF SPCA. Live webcam footage will be available throughout the adoption drive on the SF SPCA website.

All adoptable animals will be medically screened, vaccinated, microchipped and spayed/neutered. Each animal will also come with a 30-day medical assistance plan.

The SF SPCA also reported that it is looking for volunteers for the event. For details, click here.
