Many of us are familiar Ty Burrell’s portrayal of the goofy and loving dad on "Modern Family,” but with "Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” Burrell takes on the brainier side of parenthood. The actor voices Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished and intelligent dog in the world.

Ty Burrell and Max Charles pose with their larger than life characters from "Peabody & Sherman," at the Paw Print ceremony at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

The highly evolved and brilliant dog Mr. Peabody and his mischievous boy Sherman, are characters that first appeared in the 1960s, when they were introduced as part of the cartoon series, "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.” Now they are back and better than ever with their own feature-length adventure that will be in theatres nationwide on March 7.

In the film, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, use their time machine - The Wabac (pronounced way-back) to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes The Wabac out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidently rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history.  Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era:  figuring out how to be a parent.

Joining Burrell, is Max Charles voicing Sherman and Ariel Winter, also from Modern Family, who is taking a break from playing brainy Alex Dunphy, to voice Sherman’s friend Penny Peterson.

While Charles could look for inspiration in the classic cartoon for Sherman, Winter had a bigger challenge since Penny was not part of the original storyline. However, this didn’t seem to bother her,  "It was basically like they handed me a book and it was empty and I got to write the pages,” she explains. "I thought it was pretty cool that I got to create my own character.” Winter also jokes that she brought her own real life sass to the role.
