Toby, an 8-year-old black Labrador Retriever, can be called a savior for his heroic effort to keep his owner, 67-year-old, Chris Wacker, safe from a black bear.
The attack occurred on their property in northwestern Minnesota’s Becker County in late May. Toby was accompanying Wacker on a mushroom expedition. They were only about 250 feet away from their house when Wacker noticed two bear cubs in the distance and in another direction, an adult male black bear.

The black bear charged at Toby and Wacker, attacking Toby, who successfully defended Wacker from the bear.Amazingly, Toby and Wacker were able to make it back to the house, but Toby was not in great condition.
The Lab had bite marks on his shoulder and claw injuries that ranged from 4 to 6 inches deep. Randall Lindemann, the closest veterinarian, did everything in his power to save Toby’s life. From May 21 to 24, Toby was in the hospital. Upon arriving home, Toby did not eat and drank only a little bit.
The next day, Toby took a turn for the worst. Lindemann dropped everything to attempt to save Toby, but sadly, he didn’t make it.
His family described him as a friendly, smart dog who loved to sneak off and play with the neighborhood kids.
"You don’t know how much I miss that dog,” Wacker tells TwinCities.com
John Wacker and his family have buried Toby in their backyard and the Wackers will never forget the courage and strength Toby brought to their family.
