One of my favorite things about summer are the big blockbusters in theaters. This summer I am particularly excited about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Not only because I want to see my home city of San Francisco as a post-apocalyptic wasteland run by highly intelligent and powerful primates…but I’ll be honest, that is most of the reason. I wonder, though, if the apes did take over, would they keep dogs around as pets? I think they might.
Here are a few of the best examples I could find of dogs and apes getting along together.
Suryia and Roscoe met in 2007 at a reserve for endangered animals in South Carolina. In 2011, they released a book together chronicling their unlikely friendship.
Here is a touching video where you can see the two interact. Roscoe comes in around 2:25.
This baby chimpanzee was abandoned by his mother at a zoo, so one of the employees took him home. The employees Mastiff took the small chimp under its care and raised it as his own.

In the Planet of the Apes series, the apes are seen riding on horseback. Is it possible that the smaller apes could use dogs as modes of transportation as well?

Do you think apes and dogs can live happily together? I hope that if there is an ape uprising, dogs will continue to choose to side with the humans. After all, we have better treats! I’ve seen what monkeys choose to eat sometimes…
