Timber, a dog that saved its family by alerting them to a smoke and carbon monoxide leak in their home, will receive the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism at North Shore Animal Leagues 5th Annual Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon.
Timber is the only animal receiving an award at the luncheon, which North Shore says honors the years most notable champions of animal welfare. It takes place Oct. 26 at Garden City Hotel in New York City.
Honorees include:
- Beth Ostrosky Guardian Angel Award for serving as North Shore Animal Leagues spokesperson and helping heighten awareness of animals in the aftermath of hurricanes.
- Dr. Eve Ognibene The Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center Award of Achievement for spearheading the Leagues rescue operations along the Gulf Coast.
- Jacqueline Meyer and the Greater Birmingham Humane Society The Emergency Rescue Award for aiding the Leagues rescue efforts in the hurricane-stricken area.
- Bayer Animal Health Award for Outstanding Corporate Sponsorship for working with the League to place animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina through its Pet Adoptathon and Tour for Life.
- Steven Garguilo The Junior Philanthropist Award for his fundraising efforts.
- ClearChaneel Outdoor Media Award of Distinction for donating more than 200 billboards, bus shelters and urban panels for the Tour of Life and Pet Adoptathon programs.
- Karen and Don LaRocca The President Award for Humanitarian Excellence for funding the Leagues dog park and for overall generosity and support.
- Donna and John Imhof The Spirit of Compassion Award for their work on behalf of special needs animals.
