Rescuers Need Space for Katrina's Crowded Homeless

Adoptions encouraged as U.S. shelters run out of room for more animals, and puppy boom continues.

However, populations have remained high at shelters because of a boom in litters. Dogs coming in are often new mothers, and mating season just started.

The animals in New Orleans are now having puppies and kittens, said David Meyer, founder of 1-800-Save-a-Pet, the new organization launched to encourage local adoptions. The city is going to have a terrible pet overpopulation in the coming years.

According to the rescue organizations, two pets left on the street could result in 448 roaming animals within two years.

To make sure that the pet crisis remains fresh in Americans minds, Operation Save a Pet Katrina had enlisted the aid of celebrities such as Pierce Brosnan and Kevin Nealon for a publicity campaign to promote adoption.

Anyone can help anywhere, Meyer said. Adopting any pet potentially makes more space.

For more information about adopting a pet, go to1-800-Save-A-Pet.com or the Operation: Save A Pet Katrina website.
