New Spay/Neuter Clinic Targets Pit Bulls

The Maryland SPCA is expanding its spay/neuter program to target areas where there is the greatest need.

The Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is expanding its current spay/neuter program and will open a clinic to specifically serve pit bulls and cats living in low-income households.

The clinic builds on the Maryland SPCA’s current program, which altered more than 7,000 pets in 2007. The 2008 efforts will focus on areas where the Maryland SPCA sees the greatest need. The program was launched on Valentine’s Day with the theme “Show Your Pit the Love. Neuter Him.”

“Cats and pit bulls present special challenges for animal shelters,” said Aileen Gabbey, Maryland SPCA executive director. “This will make a real difference in saving animals’ lives in the community and in improving the health and safety of Baltimore.”

The program is targeting pit bulls because the breed often remains in shelters for extended periods of time and is targeting cats because they reproduce quickly – too fast to find homes for all of them.

Low-income households will qualify for reduced spay/neuter fees. For details, visit the Maryland SPCA website at www.mdspca.org

Pit bulls aren't really aggressive, they are just thought as such because they are often conditioned to be aggressive for pit fights, and when pit bulls become aggressive for whatever reason, they are harder to control because of their strength. Pit bulls can pull 30 times their body weight!

We don't need that many dogs like that.

Pit Bulls always get such a bad rap but they're really sweet dogs. It's the owners who destroy them.

This sounds like a wonderful program about the pit bulls. More people need to understand that they can be a family pet, and maybe if they can get them neutered/spayed cheap, it will help.
