I think Lauren's right; Beagles ought to be added for an even 20. When I was born my dad already had two Beagles rescued from a shelter--a 13-inch and a 15-inch. The 15-inch one was kind of hyper, but sweet, and the 13-inch was the most incredibly patient dog ever. A kid could do almost anything to him and he wouldn't really mind. As he got older and wanted to just rest and be left alone more often, he still let annoying little-kid me follow him around with a camcorder, probably bugging the fur off of him! Now we have a tiny "teacup"-sized one who's not even 13 inches, and this dog is insanely cute, playful, silly, affectionate, and adorable...they really are terrific family dogs. Brittanys, too. Our Britt is just as sweet, gentle, and loving as the Beagle.

I think BEAGLE should be on there. :( I think they're one of the best dogs for kids. :/

You might want to subdivide the Australian group to mention the Kelpie. Non aggressive affectionate, intelligent. Worth considering.

I agree with Ashleno, I think any dog can be trained/raised/socialized to be good around kids and other pets. But I'm no expert

I have 4 kids and my oldest will turn 11years old soon and she really wants a dog, I need to know of a dog that is good with kids and also that doesn't shed. I will prefer a small dog, but I heard that small dogs like yorkies or maltese are not good for kids, is that truth? please help me!

How about a well socialized puppy/dog? Most of the time that's MORE important than the breed. Sophia Yin has great advice for socializing puppies, Collen Pelar has great info on educating kids about how to interact with dogs.

Australian Shepherds are the most devoted, & loving family member anyone could ask for! Especially when raised with children - thay are great with them, love to play, & -will protect 'Until Death'!!

I have a minature poodle and he dosen't know the definition of stranger for sure! Anyone is welcome in the house to play or rub his belly. He is the most friendliest dog I have ever had. I also have a pug, but he is still a puppy and very energetic. He is very friendly, but he is a little rough for children. Hey, every dog is different. I loved the article by the way.

My Shetland Sheepdog Cassie sure helped me a lot when I was young. I had little self-esteem and a number of other issues. Perhaps she bonded mostly to me than any of my other family members because she knew I needed her the most.

I know some breeds tend to be better with kids than others, but I think you can train any dog to respect children, and vice-versa. If you raise your kids to respect your dogs as other family members, everyone will get along. I have Chihuahuas and they all get along with my nieces and nephews, even though this breed is not on your list. All the kids know that the dogs are not toys, and my dogs know that when the kids come over, they will get some special Tillman’s Treats from the cabinet, so both look forward to the visit!
