I have a 10wk old pup/ HOLD ON... original parents shi zhu/poodle then a pomerian got in the mix. my pup is the result of litter mates breeding by accident. From this article, He is a lot like a shi Zhu. He has the face, but not the fur, He has some facial markings of a pomerian, but fur more like a poodle. His sister is almost solid white and looks like a pomerian. He is partially trained to "pee paper", very possessive of my husband and I, very affectionate, he mother stopped nursing around 5 wks and I think he still tries to nurse on things, so what do you think I should expect. I havent had a dog in 15 yrs.

Ok, I enjoyed reading the information given. I am concerned that I can properly train my puppy (getting in Dec.). I am a retired younger senior and concerned on "how stubborn" this breed of dog is. Thanks for the article.

We have a 13 week old Shih Tzu. Your comments helped to understand the stuborness (that I already knew existed in this breed). in the last two days i have noticed just what you were talking about. I think they do better with loving discipline. my Tibet literally told me off this evning. We did not have a good day and i know she will eventually do what I want, but the last two days she is taking her sweet time....which means you need a lot of patience. Your article has reminded me of what I need to do to so we have a win, win situation. We are crate training and I was happy that you said it is okay to do time outs in the crate. Thanks for your help.

We were given a Shi Tzu a couple years ago, we were babysitting it and the owner decided she didn't want to deal with a puppy after all so we got to keep him. He is our baby, and the most amazing little dog we have ever owned. We live on a farm and have chickens, he loves the chickens, and actually herds them into the coop. If he were a big dog, he'd be a cow dog. I would recommend this breed to new empty nesters, he fills the void after the last child leaves.

I ADOPTED A SHIH TZU THROUGH THE ADS ON THE COMPUTER, HIS NAME IS ZAKE, HE IS AN ADORABLE LOVING DOG, WHEN I ADOPTED HIM, HE HAD UNRULY CURLY LONG HAIR AND I FEEL IN LOVE WITH HIM, I HAD HIM GROOMED AND NOTICED THESE MOLES/ AND OR WARTS ON HIM, THE VET SAID TO LEAVE THEM ALONE, BUT I NOTICED HE IS GETTING MORE AND MORE ON HIM, SO I TOOK HIM TO THE VET AND HE SAID HE COULD REMOVE THEM WITH SURGERY, HE HAS ONE ON HIS HEAD THAT IS REALLY BIG AND GROWING, NOW HE HAS SEVERAL ON HIS BACK AND HIS LEGS AND BEHIND HIS EARS, WHAT CAUSES THESE???????? THE VET DOES NOT KNOW. THE VET SAID TO REMOVE THEM IT WOULD COST $125.00 EACH. I CAN'T AFFORD THAT. OUR ZAKE IS A WONDERFUL DOG, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT THESE GROWTHS ON HIM. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE AS TO WHAT TO DO. I WOULD APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH. ALSO, SOMETIMES THEY DO BLEED WHEN HE LICKS THE ONE ON HIS LEG.

I got my first Shih Tzu 18 years ago as sort of a "rescue" from my brother. I was single and lived in a small apartment. Buster went everywhere with me and my parents "babysat" while I worked evenings. All he ever wanted was to be with me. Yes, they can be somewhat stubborn, but if you want a loyal loving companion, there is no better dog to have. We camped and I would sneak him into the park showers to cool us both off. They love to ride in the car and travel with, anythhing to be with you. Since then, my family has had a total of 8 Shih tzu between all of us, because of Buster. I now have 3 myself, which the newest one is a 20 month old rescue. Potty training is a challenge, but stick with it. Be patient and consistent. I have found that having more than one keeps them feeling safe while I am at work. I have had many great dogs of many breeds in my life, but the Shih Tzu are the best companions. However, if you don't have lots of time with them, don't get one. They live to be near their " person", and it isn't fair to them if you don't have the time.

i love mine. her name is zoe. She is 4. Black and white. She always loves to play catch but doesnt always bring me back the ball when i tell her to. She is also very aggresive to other dogs even if theyre bigger. She always chases our neighbors golden retreiver back home. She more aggressive towards males i dont know why. we also have two other dogs. a Laso opso. i dont know how to spell it. she is the nicest one we have. We also have a 1 yr old Shih poo. a shih tzu poodle mix. She always loves to play and has to follow you around everywhere. which gets annoying. She is also the more aggressive one between the three but not to other dogs besides ours. She gets jealous very easily. i like our full shih tzu the most of our dogs.

I was given my Shih-tzu for a mother's day gift three years ago and I named her Maxine after the greeting card character. I and anyone who has met Maxi cannot believe the wonderful temperment she has. Just today, someone knocked on my door; 3 different times and Maxi doesn't bark. I think if she has barked 20 times since I have her, it's alot. She is so smart and just wants to give love to others. She is great with kids and I cannot emphasize how smart she is. She will take her paw and rub it against my leg if I am sitting and I will say "show mommy" and she leads me either to the kitchen for something to eat, the front door so she can go out and do her business and the newest place she led me to, was my bedroom where she loves to hang out with me and watch tv as well as she does sleep with my husband and I. When she took me into the bedroom, I couldn't believe it. She didn't want to be alone in there. Her apartment (crate) is in our bedroom. She only has had an accident in the home when she has been sick. I live in a complex of 900 units and Maxi is referred to as the mayor of my area. I am telling you that I believe Maxi is the way she is because of the way we raised/trained her. With Love! She knew she could trust us, depend on us and not ever have to fear us. I know that I sound like a bragging mom which I am but I am not bragging as much as I am sharing the truth about having a Shih-tzu as a pet for all ages. If you have the love to give, that's all they want, if you don't, then do not get a shih-tzu or any pet for that matter but certain dogs do require the attendence of their owners where other breeds do not. Afterall, people do have to go to work and have wonderful loving pets.

I have a 4 month old Shih Tzu puppy named Murphy. He is my first "little" dog, but I did a lot of research before getting him, so I knew what I was getting into. I just had no idea just how funny they are. He makes me laugh everyday, and yes, there are piddle accidents everyday, but they are accidents and he is learning to go potty on command. Your article made me chuckle because it described my little Murphy to the letter. Thank you for another laugh today.

As I was reading this portion of the magazine, I found myself laughing because it reminds me of my 2 year old Bailey and my new puppy Max. I absolutely love my dogs and they love me back unconditionally. These are the best family dogs anyone can have. They are great with both sexes and wonderful with children. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

On page 120 of this magazine, the Shih is carried in a bag. Where can I get one of those?

Thanks for such a good review.

everything you said was true. We have an almost 5 (can't believe it!) year old shih-tzu named Suki, and she is a joy to live with, stubborn at times, but quite patient, and wants to be near us, or on our laps, and is so happy to see us when we have been gone, she will lay on her back, and have us rub her tummy...it's so cute, and she is so sweet, and yes she loves cookies!and we love her!

After my first year with my little Shih Tzu master, I would seriously recommend that anyone thinking of becoming a slave to one of these adorable little clowns spend a bit of time getting at least an idea of what they are letting themselves in
for.
I wouldn't trade my Raggedy Andy for anything in the world, he is the love of my life, the light of my eyes, the joy of my
heart...
He's stubborn, arrogant, and extremely demanding.

After our first year together, he's got me
convinced...
I wouldn't want him any other way.

My little Ike is the first shih I've ever owned, and I don't think I'll ever own another breed! He is wonderful (he can also be a stinker, but that's to be expected!)I highly recommend a shih tzu to anyone who has the time to devote to them. They do want to be with you 24/7 if possible!

I am looking into purchasing a Shih Tzu puppy. I have had Miniature Schnauzers in the past. I wanted to research the breed and it's traits. This site was informative.
