I'd definitely trust my dog's judgement.

Definitely heed the dog! I was once walking with a friend's collie on the dirt roads near her house. This was a country dog not a city slicker like myself, and not much of anything phased him. But one evening while we were passing a very rocky bluff he started growling and snarling and went down into a crouch ready to spring. I figured whatever he was warning away was nothing I was prepared to tangle with, so I got out of there quick. He held his position until I was safely down the road and then came running along and was very nonchalant afterward. Dogs hear better than we do, definitely smell better than we do, and have better vision than ourselves in low-light conditions. I'd trust the dog's judgment on this one.
