Five Tips for Making Your Home Smell Fresh

DogChannel offers five tips to battle dog odor in your home.

1. Clean up your dog’s accidents right away, and use an enzymatic cleaner or deodorizing product to eliminate any lingering scent.

2. Wash fabrics your dog encounters regularly and keep him clean. Make regular baths a part of your dog’s routine, and remember to thoroughly dry him after each wash.

3. Sprinkle baking soda over your dog’s favorite spot before you vacuum. Let the powder sit for five or 10 minutes then vacuum up. Baking soda is a natural odor eliminator that works well in dog homes.

4. Air fresheners, room or fabric sprays, and carpet powders you vacuum up can help combat that dog smell. Choose a light, fresh scent that’s not too strong or overpowering. Also, air purifiers with HEPA filters diminish household odors and battle allergens like dog dander.

5. Let in a little fresh air. Open your home’s windows and doors to replace stale air with fresh outdoor air. A fan can help blow odors from a recent accident out of your house.

This article leaves me stunned. Why is it that we rarely ever consider what's best for THE DOG?

The fragrance products used in air-fresheners and room and fabric sprays contain high concentrations of potent and long-lasting synthetic chemicals. They are designed to disperse quickly into the air where they can linger on fabrics and surfaces for months. They can numb the olfactory sense, increase allergies and asthmatic reactions, and cause migraine headaches, throat irritation, fatigue, forgetfulness and irritability. Found in some products are 1-4-Dichlorobenzene – a suspected carcinogen that caused liver and kidney tumors when ingested by animals, and d-limonene – an eye and skin irritant.

Artificial fragrances are also used in laundry detergent. If you see the word "surfactant" on the label it is translated to mean that the product caontains benzene and sodium sulfonates, ethanols, ethoxylates, phenols and di-, ti- and monoethanolamines. Detergents also contain phosphates and phosphate alternatives, optical brighteners and petroleum distillates. These chemicals can have toxic effects on mammals, creating chronic health problems and altering the activity of certain genes.

Do the right thing for the dog in your life. Throw out products that use artificial fragrances. Use only natural cleaners. And learn to love his smell.
