Dogs In Review interviews Colton Johnson, co-owner of GCh. Rocheuses Me And My Shadow Of Cornus, the Bouvier des Flandres that took Group 1st at the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship held Dec. 15 and 16 in Orlando, Fla.
Breed: Bouvier des Flandres
Dog Name: GCh. Rocheuses Me And My Shadow Of Cornus ‘Casper’
Owners: F. and C. Dreyfus, H. and C. Johnson, and K. Brown
Handler: Heather Johnson
Won: The Herding Group at the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship
Dogs In Review: How did you prepare for the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show?
Colton Johnson: Casper is groomed, bathed and stripped once a week. He is roadworked a few times a week several miles on our golf cart and spends hours a day with a few of his buddies running on our 6 acres.
DIR: How did you feel when Casper got Group 1?
CJ: It’s so memorable to win at a show like this because the nation’s best is represented there.
DIR: Other than winning Group 1, what was the most memorable experience for you about the AKC/Eukanuba show?
CJ: My mother-in-law and father-in-law have dedicated their lives to the breeding of their two respective breeds, Bouviers des Flandres and Old English Sheepdogs, and it is so rewarding to see the happiness on their faces because a dog like Casper is being recognized. Also, several years ago in 2006, their bred/owned Old English Sheepdog Ch. Bugaboo’s Big Resolution (call name ‘Smokin’) won the group there as well, so to have both of their breeds accomplish a win like that says a lot for their breeding program.
DIR: What is your most proud moment of Casper?
CJ: Casper has given us many great moments. He won our national in 2011, top 20, numerous regional specialties, won Best of Breed and Group 4th at last year’s AKC show and has been the No. 1 Bouvier and top Herding dog in the country both in 2011 and 2012, with limited showing of only several shows a month.
DIR: What was your favorite moment from showing this dog?
CJ: My favorite moment of Casper would be hard to pinpoint to just one win. I on a personal level have had such a great journey with this dog. He is very special to me in the ring as well as being part of my family.
DIR: Do you have any future plans for Casper?
CJ: Casper’s future plans are to retire from active campaigning in 2013 after the Westminster dog show in February, although this will be hard to do. Casper has proven to be an awesome stud dog and with that said we look forward to watching his offspring make their mark in the ring in the next few years to come.
DIR: Do you plan on attending AKC/Eukanuba next year with this or another dog?
CJ: In 2013 we anxiously are proud to start the campaign of a young Old English Sheepdog male to the fancy. His name is Bugaboo's Picture Perfect (call name ‘Swagger’). He already has a Best in Show from the classes. He is a beautiful representative of his breed, and we feel he could have a great future ahead of him.
DIR: What are your thoughts on the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show?
CJ: I feel the AKC show helps educate spectators about how important it is to buy from breeders, and it helps the public understand breeds specifically. Being educated helps families make better choices on a breed that will be their forever pet!
