The English Foxhound boasts an ancestry that dates to the late 1600s. Stag hunting had been a popular sport of the British landed gentry, but when stag became scarce, the aristocracy took to pursuing the more abundant fox. They demanded a dog with great speed, superb scenting powers, incredible endurance, good vocal cords and sound feet. Breeding selectively for these qualities, they arrived at the English Foxhound, a dog averaging about 24 inches in height. Its short, smooth coat may be anything from white to the traditional hound colors of black, tan and white. Always run in packs, they're happiest in the company of their masters and other dogs. This pack instinct makes the Foxhound quick to bond to its family members. Changing times have meant fewer packs, and most are owned by hunt associations. The English Foxhound is a handsome hound of true sporting blood, that enjoys exercise and activities to challenge its mind.
