The name Estrela Mountain Dog is a variation on this breed’s original Portuguese name, Cao Da Serra Estrela, which means “Dog of the Star Mountains.” Once a shepherd’s companion and flock protector in the rocky mountains of Portugal, this well-muscled, intelligent dog is incredibly sturdy and hard-working, exhibiting strong bone and lots of stamina. Loyal, affectionate and obedience to its owners, the Estrela Mountain Dog is indifferent and sometimes aggressive to others. It is an active, alert guard dog that is said to form deep friendships with children. Its guard tendencies and occasional stubbornness call for plenty of early socialization and regular training.
