What's this?
These hounds are small versions of the English Foxhound and were developed to follow the large, slow European hare, accompanied by hunters on foot. They have gentle, houndlike temperaments. If raised in a pack, they are more dog-oriented, but when raised in a home, they enjoy their families. Harriers are medium-size dogs, weighing 48 to 60 pounds and standing 19 to 22 inches high. Their coats are short, coarse and hard, requiring only weekly brushing to keep them glossy. They may be any hound color, including blue. These dogs have rough-and-tumble, independent personalities, and a high energy level. They are most suited to active families that would enjoy having a dog along on long hikes, bike rides or horseback rides. This breed is an excellent watchdog, barking to alert its people when anyone approaches the home.
