The Kuvasz is another Hungarian breed with a long history. The beautiful white dogs were used for hunting, herding and flock guarding, a job the breed still does with much success. This is a large working dog, with males measuring 28 to 29.5 inches at the shoulder, females 2 inches less. Weight for males ranges from 88 to 115 pounds; females from 66 to 93 pounds. The double coat is a lustrous pure white or ivory. It sheds heavily and needs daily brushing to remove dead hair and to keep it fitting neatly. The breed is courageous and intelligent with great stamina. Because it's a working breed with a dominant mindset, this dog needs early socialization and regular training sessions to bring it to its potential. Best in the country or suburbs, Kuvasz have a high activity level and should get daily outdoor exercise. The breed is suspicious of strangers and protective of its family, making it an excellent guard dog that is gentle and devoted to its people.
