Norfolk Terrier DOG PROFILE

This drop-eared version of the Norwich Terrier, the Norfolk is a small, active teddy bear of a dog that is an amusing companion, easy to care for, and a good watchdog. Its background is identical to that of the Norwich. Small specimens of the Irish Terrier crossed with other terrier breeds, possibly the Border and the Cairn, led to the development of both Norfolk and Norwich. For 30 years the two ear types, drop and prick, were shown together in competition, but interbreeding the two types created problems. So prick-eareds were bred to each other and drop-ear to drop-ear. Within a few generations two distinct breeds emerged, and promoters of the drop-eared variety applied for separate breed classification for their little dog. This was granted by The Kennel Club (England) in 1963 under the new breed name, Norfolk. The Norfolk measures just 10 inches at the shoulder. Its coat is hard and wiry in shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, or grizzle. At home in any size accommodations in town or country, a good daily walk satisfies its exercise needs. Keep training sessions short, sweet and frequent to accommodate the short terrier attention span. Norfolks are outgoing, fearless dogs that enjoy playing with children.
