Pyrenean Shepherd DOG PROFILE

Its origin lost in the mists of time, the Pyrenean Shepherd Dog has probably lived in the French Pyrenees mountains for well over 2,000 years. However, it wasn't until the 1920s that the breed became popular in the show ring. Across the centuries, each valley developed its own version of the little sheepdog. They come in fawn, brindle, black, gray, and blue, brindle or fawn merle. There are two varieties of Pyrenean Shepherd: Rough-Faced with medium-length hair on the face and a long or medium-length harsh coat that's almost flat or slightly wavy (very long coats often form cords on the legs and rump), and Smooth-Faced with short, fine hair on the face and a medium-length coat. Weekly brushing removes dead hair. Underneath the many coats and colors dwells a vivacious, intelligent friend. This breed likes to feel it has an important job to do and responds quickly to training. Although the Pyrenean Shepherd is of small stature, 15 to 21 inches, it can take any amount of exercise and should be walked or run daily. Often wary of strangers, this breed is devoted to its family.
