2. If you are looking for a lap-sized dog and another family member wants a dog that weighs 75 pounds, talk it over. Make certain that all members of your family will be happy with the smaller dog. The advantages of a smaller dog are many. He can sit in your lap. He does not drool. Clean-up in the yard is much easier as the feces, like the dog, are small! If you so desire, a small dog can easily sleep in your bed. Theres also a lot less to groom! Visitors to your home can be overwhelmed by a large dog who jumps up to greet them, while they often think that a bouncy small dog is cute and fun. And a small dog can be as good a watchdog as a larger breed. Small dogs will eat much less than large dogs, costing less to maintain.
3. If you have a fenced-in yard, you will find it very easy to toilet-train a dog. The dog can easily be let outside for his potty time whenever needed. However, Miniature Schnauzers do very well in apartment life. As adults, they will only need to be taken out for bathroom breaks three or four times a day. A reminder: when walking your dog, it is essential to carry a plastic bag to pick up droppings. These can easily be tossed in a handy trash receptacle on your way home.
4. The Miniature Schnauzer is a "coated" breed. His coat will grow long and straggly without proper care. If not kept up, the coat will become matted, and he will no longer look the way he should. You must have the time and patience to brush your dog once a week. Every two or three months, the pet Miniature Schnauzer should be taken to the groomer to be trimmed so he looks like a true representative of his breed.
5. As a responsible dog owner, it is up to you to make certain that your dog is trained not to bark needlessly. The Miniature Schnauzer can be a bit noisy, but it is not fair to your neighbors to leave your dog outside to bark endlessly. With the Mini Schnauzers trainability, this, if a problem, can be easily stopped.
If you answered yes to these questions, you are on your way to becoming a Miniature Schnauzer person!
