6 Warning Signs Your New Pup Is Ill
What if my puppy has diarrhea and is vomiting? If your pup has loose stools or throws up excessively, it might be hosting parasites such as worms. Another possibility is that its food didn't agree with it, or that it has eaten a non-food item, such as one of its toys.

What if my puppy is coughing? If your puppy coughs often, it may have a respiratory infection. Don't smoke around your dogs! says Debra Eldredge, D.V.M., of Vernon, New York, author of Pills for Pets: The A to Z Guide to Drugs and Medications for Your Animal Companion (Citadel Trade, 2003). Studies have found that dogs exposed to second-hand smoke have an increased risk of acquiring lung and nasal cancer.

What if my puppy suffers from lameness? If your new pup is limping, it may be suffering from a condition as simple as a pulled muscle or as serious as a fracture. It might also have a problem related to overly rapid growth, such as osteochondritis dessicans, a hereditary disease that occurs in puppyhood, particularly among large-breed, rapidly growing puppies. The cartilage develops cracks and flaps that cause inflammation, joint instability, pain and lameness.

What if my puppy has a lack of appetite? If your puppy is not eating, it may have the same conditions that induce diarrhea and vomiting. Other possibilities are conditions as simple as not liking the food its eating, or as serious as a metabolic problem, such as congenital kidney disease.

What if my puppy is lethargic? A puppy that isn't active and interested in the world around it may have one or a number of health problems, such as distemper (often-fatal disease with symptoms of respiratory illness and digestive upset), or an adverse reaction to vaccines. Lethargy is not a common puppy condition. Most pups are either bouncing around or sound asleep, Dr. Eldredge says.
What if my puppy scratches excessively? If your puppy scratches itself often, it could have a problem as simple as fleas or dry skin, or a more complex problem, such as allergies. All these symptoms require evaluation by a veterinarian.
