Tosa Inu-Tosa Ken DOG PROFILE

This large dog ranges from 100 to 200 pounds and is at least 24½ to 25½ inches tall at the shoulder. This breed is also known as the Tosa Ken and the Tosa Token, and was developed as a fighting dog in Japan. The Japanese wanted a strong, aggressive, determined dog to dominate the sport of pit fighting, so they combined Akita-type dogs with St. Bernards, Mastiffs, Great Danes and Bulldogs. They developed the Tosa Inu, then bred only Tosas to Tosas to establish consistency of type.

The practice of pit fighting is illegal in the U.S. and other civilized countries, and the Tosa is now bred for the qualities that make it a good pet. They are somewhat rare in the U.S., but they are registered in Europe through the Federation Cynologique Internationale.

The Tosa has a short, smooth coat. Solid red is the preferred color, but brindle, dull black and fawn are allowable colors. White markings may also appear on a correct Tosa. The Tosa is agile and athletic. It requires owners who are physically and mentally strong. Properly handled, the Tosa is a quiet, obedient family pet.
